Nancy, a talented painter, and Michael, an up-and-coming architect, are very much in love and plan to marry – despite the protests of Michael’s rich mother, Marion. Unfortunately the lovers get into a terrible automobile accident which leaves Michael in a coma for days. He comes out of it with only a minor injury, however Nancy’s face has been scarred beyond recognition. Marion visits Nancy in the hospital and offers to pay for an expensive operation that would give the young woman a beautiful new face... if Nancy never sees Michael again. Convinced that Michael no longer wants to be with her anyway, Nancy agrees. Meanwhile, Michael's mother has told him that Nancy died in the accident and he must carry on without her.
